Hello October!

Wow, we can’t believe it’s that time of year already!!!
Here at Sign and Bloom we LOVE everything about this time of year, from carving pumpkins to crisp autumnal walks, there’s just something SO magical about the upcoming 'BER' months!
We've kickstarted autumn with the launch of our Halloween Taster Workshops which have been so much fun, we have been having a spooktacular time learning lots of new signs and rhymes!
This month marks AAC Awareness Month, so what a great time to celebrate all the different ways we can support communication for individuals who may struggle with traditional spoken language.

At Sign and Bloom, we believe in the power of every voice and the importance of developing inclusive communication environments so no one ever feels left behind.
During this weeks blog, we're diving into the world of AAC, exploring how it can be used, and how it beautifully interlinks with Makaton.
What is AAC?
Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) consists of various tools and strategies that help individuals communicate when they are unable to do so effectively through spoken language.
AAC can be categorised into two main types:
1. Unaided AAC: This includes methods that do not require any external tools, such as sign language or gestures.
2. Aided AAC: This involves tools or devices that assist in communication, ranging from picture boards and communication books to high-tech speech-generating devices.
AAC can be beneficial for individuals with a many conditions, including developmental delays, autism, stroke, or other speech-language disorders.
The goal with AAC is to provide a means of communication that empowers individuals to express their needs, thoughts, and feelings, thereby enhancing their social interactions and overall quality of life.
How is AAC Used?
AAC is tailored to each individual’s needs and can be implemented in various settings, including homes, schools, and community environments.
Here are some common ways AAC is utilised:
Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS):
This method uses pictures to help individuals communicate their needs.
Users can exchange pictures to convey messages, making it easier to express wants and desires.
Speech-Generating Devices (SGDs):
These high-tech tools can produce speech through touch screens or eye-tracking technology, allowing users to communicate more dynamically.
Apps and Software:
Numerous applications are available that facilitate communication through symbols and text-to-speech functions, making AAC more accessible than ever.
Using AAC not only assists with basic communication but also encourages independence, social connections, and academic success.
By providing alternative methods for expression, AAC opens doors for individuals to engage meaningfully with those around them.
Makaton: A Unique Communication Approach
Makaton is an engaging and visual language program that combines signs, symbols, and spoken words.
It is particularly effective for individuals with communication difficulties, including those who use AAC.
Makaton emphasises the use of signs and symbols alongside speech, which can enhance understanding and provide a supportive framework for communication.
How Makaton Interlinks with AAC
Makaton and AAC are deeply interlinked, here are some ways they complement each other:
1. Visual Support: Makaton signs and symbols can serve as visual aids in AAC systems, helping users convey messages more effectively.
2. Enhancing Comprehension: By incorporating Makaton into AAC strategies, users can benefit from the visual reinforcement of spoken language, making it easier to understand and remember.
3. Promoting Social Interaction: Makaton encourages participation in social settings, which aligns with the goals of AAC to foster meaningful communication and relationships.
4. Flexible Communication: Both AAC and Makaton offer adaptable solutions, allowing individuals to choose the methods that best suit their unique communication styles and preferences.
The Benefits of AAC and Makaton
The integration of AAC and Makaton can provide significant benefits for individuals facing communication challenges such as:
Increased Independence: By providing tools and strategies for self-expression, individuals can communicate their needs and desires more freely, fostering independence.
Improved Social Skills: AAC and Makaton promote social interaction, enabling users to engage with peers, family, and the community more effectively.
Enhanced Learning Opportunities: Communication is key to learning. The use of AAC and Makaton can help individuals access educational content and participate actively in their learning environments.
Greater Emotional Well-being: When individuals can express themselves, it can lead to a boost in confidence and a reduction in frustration, ultimately enhancing emotional health.
